How to Keep Investors’ Confidence after Being Labeled as Polluting Firms: The Role of External Political Ties and Internal Green Innovation Capabilities

This study delves into investors’ perceptions of the polluting label attached to listed manufacturing firms, emphasizing interplay between external political ties and internal green innovative capability in influencing these perceptions. Drawing on a longitudinal analysis firms China from 2010 2020 employing difference-in-differences (DID) approach, we treat identified under National Specially Monitored (NSM) program as treated group, while non-NSM form control group. The time variable captures period post introduction NSM program. Our findings highlight that created loss prospect for investors, signifying diminishing returns over time. Interestingly, with closer connections local governments experienced amplified negative investor In contrast, strong affiliations central government robust capabilities cushioned adverse reactions. Notably, proved even more beneficial when complemented by capability. By melding signal theory literature sense-making, this research adds nuance discourse role resources determining firm success amidst environmental controversies.
